"People's Forum · Academic Frontier" Yao Shujie: Core Characteristics and Historical Opportunities of China's Sustained Economic Development

【Abstract】Over the past 40 years of China's reform and opening-up, despite experiencing multiple global and regional economic crises and significant historical events, it has managed to maintain continuous economic growth. It has transformed from a poor and backward agricultural nation into a thriving industrialized economy, with per capita GDP surpassing ten thousand US dollars for three consecutive years. Not only has it reached the global average level, but it has also historically eradicated absolute poverty nationwide, continuing its development towards becoming a high-income economy and a developed country. The remarkable economic miracle achieved by China is based on the foundation of being the world's most populous nation and a previously underdeveloped agricultural country. It possesses important political characteristics of adhering to the correct leadership of the Communist Party of China, as well as core characteristics of a large economy such as a large population, vast territory, and rich traditional culture. China also benefits from important historical opportunities brought by global scientific and technological development and the common progress of global human civilization. In the face of various risks and challenges at home and abroad, China must firmly uphold the "Four Confidences" to achieve Chinese-style modernization. It needs to confront unilateralism challenges with a more open and inclusive attitude, continuously deepen domestic economic and political reforms, strive to transform production methods, stabilize the political and social environment, overcome the "middle-income trap," and maintain sustained high-quality development of the economy and society.
